The Arab League is set to have a special meeting on Wednesday to discuss the ongoing crisis in Yemen, reported AFP.
Yemen has been in a crisis since September, when Shiite Houthi militants took over the capital city of Sanaa and later ousted the government in early February.
“The purpose of the meeting is to review the recent dangerous developments on the Yemeni scene,” Arab League deputy head Ahmed bin Helli told AFP at the Arab League’s Cairo headquarters.
The Arab League’s decision to hold a meeting coincides with UN Security Council discussions Sunday on a resolution that calls for the Houthi rebels to “immediately and unconditionally” step down, according to the AP. The UN has also called for the release of ousted president Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi and his Prime Minister Khalid Bahah from house arrest.
Since their rise to power in September, the Houthi militants have been accused of torture and other crimes.
