Secretary General of the Arab League Esmat Abdel-Meguid said Tuesday the league will start contacts with Egypt and other member states to prepare for an urgent Arab summit, which he said will be "a historic step" in solidarity with Jerusalem and in rejecting Israeli occupation of Arab lands, reported Kuwait News Agency (KUNA).
Speaking to reporters, Abdel-Meguid welcomed the call made by Egyptian and
Syrian presidents to hold an Arab summit as soon as possible and face up the
Israeli massacres against Palestinians in Jerusalem and other Palestinian cities, said the agency.
He said the call for the summit came to mirror the anger and concern felt by the Arab masses.
He added that some Arab states have already said they were ready to attend the summit.
Meanwhile, Abdel-Meguid told reporters that he sent urgent letters to UN chief Kofi Annan, the current president of the UN Security Council as well as to France, the current chairman of the European Union.
He said that he urged them to take the necessary measures to halt the Israeli massacres against the Palestinian people, according to KUNA - Albawaba.com
