An Arab Atomic Energy Commission conference kicked off in the Egyptian capital of Cairo Saturday with the aim of promoting peaceful use of atomic energy in the region. The conference has assembled 150 nuclear experts from fourteen different Arab states.
Egyptian Electricity and Energy Minister Hasan Yunis called for the Middle East to rid itself of weapons of mass destruction, while highlighting the need for pacific applications of nuclear energy, according to MENA news agency.
Arab League Secretary General Amr Mussa, on his part, sent a message to the conference in which he warned against Israel's refusal to sign the nuclear non-proliferation treaty or open its nuclear installations to inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency. (Albawaba.com)
