Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat left Gaza City for Cairo on Wednesday for talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on the situation in the Palestinian territories after almost 10 weeks of deadly violence, officials said.

Arafat holds regular consultations with Mubarak, who is the leading Arab mediator between Israel and the Palestinians.

The Palestinian leader returned to Gaza on Monday after a tour of several Gulf states. He brandished a machine pistol as he arrived.

On Sunday, he denied widespread media reports of secret negotiations with Israel, saying he no longer had confidence in Prime Minister Ehud Barak -- GAZA CITY (AFP)
