Arafat Leaves for Clinton Summit

Palestinian president Yasser Arafat left Wednesday for a summit with US President Bill Clinton in Washington as Israeli-Palestinian peace talks resumed with the aim of forging a final peace by September.

Arafat will use the meeting Thursday to urge the United States to put pressure on Israel to implement signed agreements, his aide Nabil Abu Rdeineh told AFP.

"We want the United States to continue active efforts to push forward the peace process," said Abu Rdeineh.

"There are still obstacles that should be removed."

Arafat was originally due to meet Clinton on Wednesday but the summit was put off for 24 hours to enable him to attend Tuesday's funeral of Syrian president Hafez Assad - GAZA CITY (AFP)
