Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak telephoned Palestinian president Yasser Arafat on Thursday to discuss issues regarding the Middle East peace process, Egypt's state-owned MENA news agency reported.
The two leaders "exchanged views on the latest events affecting the peace process" and discussed "ideas on the obstacles and difficulties facing the Palestinian track," MENA said.
Egypt's ambassador in Tel Aviv, Mohammed Bassiuni, was in Cairo Wednesday evening to report to the foreign ministry on a crisis threatening to topple Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak's 11-month old government.
The ambassador told reporters he had presented foreign minister Amr Moussa with a "detailed report on the internal situation in Israel and the ruling coalition and the extent of its effects on the peace process."
