Palestinian President Yasser Arafat thanked Iraqi President Saddam Hussein for Baghdad’s plan to set aside part of its oil revenues for the Palestinians.
Arafat, in a telegraph, told the Iraqi President that “your decision signals your appreciation of the sacrifices of the Palestinian people, and your commitment that we are one nation.”
The Iraqi President told his cabinet Saturday that “we want a memorandum to be sent to the United Nations and the Security Council asking that a quota of the revenue from the 'oil for food' program be set aside for the Palestinian people to support them."
The program allows Iraq, which has been under UN sanctions in the wake of its invasion of Kuwait in 1990, to export crude oil in order to buy essential items, under international control.
