Syrian President Hafez Al-Assad has died, Syrian TV announced Saturday.
The state TV said that the president died Saturday morning.
AFP reported that Assad, who was 69, died of a heart attack.
The death was not officially announced in Damascus until 18:OO local time, and the majority of Syrians were not yet aware of their leader's passing.
The Syrian TV was broadcasting an urgent session of the People's Council (parliament), that has announced the article ragarding the age of the president in the national constitution was to be lowered.
The change will entitle Assad's son, Bashar, to succeed his father -- Albawaba.com
