ATFL and State Department "Team-Up" to Remove Deadly Cluster Bomblets in Lebanon
The American Task Force for Lebanon (ATFL) is spearheading a campaign - with support from the U.S. Department of State - to raise money to continue clearing thousands of unexploded cluster bomblets in Lebanon.
The Department of State will provide an additional $200,000 - a two-for-one match - for every dollar ATFL raises, up to $100,000. This $300,000 will be sufficient to keep ten full demining teams in the field for an entire month, clearing cluster bomblets and saving the lives of innocent civilians.
Here are grim statistics from August 14, 2006 to March 31, 2009: 21 civilians were killed; 204 civilians were injured; 14 deminers were killed; 43 expert deminers were injured.
The American Red Cross has commended ATFL and the Department of State for their humanitarian effort to remove unexploded bomblets in Lebanon. The Honorable Thomas A. Nassif, ATFL Chairman, and three current members of Congress, Representatives Darrell Issa, Nick Rahall, and Charles Boustany, Jr., are participating in the campaign.
