Egyptian police authorities arrested an English teacher who warned US ambassador David Welch in an e-mail to the FBI that he risked his life if he visited the man's home town of Asyut, a judicial source said Monday.

Issam Hanna, a teacher in a private school in the town 380 kilometers south of the capital of Cairo, sent the message shortly before Welch visited Asyut on December 11 and 12 without incident.

Alerted by the FBI, Egyptian authorities tracked down Hanna, who had boasted of his deed to a colleague, though his motives were still unclear, the source added, cited by AFP.

Hanna is due to go on trial on January 15, accused of spreading abroad false information liable to harm the national interest. (Albawaba.com)
