Thousands of baboons have run amok in Saudi Arabia, killing a child and attacking people in the southwest cities of Taif, Abha, Baha and Fifa, a wildlife official said on Tuesday.

The official at the National Wildlife Protection Authority told the Gulf News that one baboon snatched a two-year-old girl from her father, and she was later found dead in a mountainous area in Taif.

Panic is gripping these regions.

The baboons have been attacking houses and schools in Baha and the Abha Faculty for Girls. Farmers in the southern mountainous area of Fifa have repeatedly complained to the authorities, saying 15,000 baboons have run amok, attacking homes and damaging farms.

Saudi authorities are now drawing up plans to sterilize or poison the baboons to check their population, he added – Albawaba.com
