The security services in Bahrain have arrested a university lecturer and part-time journalist with the British publication the Economist, according to the World Organization Against Torture.

Jassem Hussein Ali was detained on November 1, the Geneva-based group said in a statement.

In London, The Economist said it could not confirm the arrest and was trying to check the report.

Jassem Hussein Ali worked for The Economist Intelligence Unit, a spokesman said.

The organization said the 41-year-old, who studied in the United States and lectures in economics at Bahrain University, was arrested at his home in Hamad Town, in the south of the capital Manama.

"Security services searched (his home) and confiscated documents and computers disks," the statement said.

Bahraini authorities could not be contacted for comment -- NICOSIA (AFP)
