Bahrain's government has said a city hall was set on fire during a night of clashes between protesters and police over the execution of three Shia prisoners, Associated Press reported.

The Interior Ministry said Monday that firefighters were able to contain the fire, and that it appeared to have been set alight intentionally.

The three prisoners executed Sunday had been convicted of killing three policemen, and were put to death by firing squad.

Rights groups have spoken out, calling the charges politically motivated and alleging the men's confessions were obtained under torture.

Hundreds protested in Shia villages following the executions.

Bahrain has been rocked by sporadic protests since 2011 by its majority Shia population, which has long complained of marginalization, against the ruling al-Khalifa family.
