More than 50 Arab and foreign labor leaders are expected to gather in Bahrain in February for a two-day public employment-services conference, according to a statement published by Bahrain's labor and social affairs ministry.

The gathering will be hosted by the France-based World Association of Public Employment Services (WAPES).

According to the statement that was published in the ministry's official website, Bahrain has recently joined WAPES, which now includes more than 80 member countries.

Bahrain is the first to join the world organization among the Gulf countries.

The association is based in France and has links with the International Labor Organization (ILO), according to the statement.

WAPES was established 13 years ago by six countries: (the US, Canada, France, Sweden, The Netherlands and Germany) with the support of the ILO.

The aim of WAPES is to encourage contacts between member institutions and promote an interactive exchange of information and experiences, to assist members to find the best solution and possibilities to employment-service problems and operations, said the statement.

It also seeks to encourage co-operation of the more-developed and less-developed agencies and government labor bodies and provide services of common interest such as surveys, studies, training and upgrading the organization conferences -- Albawaba.com
