Bahrain will mark the UN Day in Support of Victims of Torture on June 26, in the Gulf state's first-ever commemoration of the event, reported the Gulf Daily News on Monday.

The newly-established Bahrain Human Rights Society (BHRS) is organizing the event, said the paper.

"More than 15 young amateur artists will work among shoppers, creating paintings on the subject of torture. They will be painting on-the-spot each day and the public is welcome to come and watch them work," said BHRS interim president Sabika Al Najjar.

Fifteen Bahraini artists have registered so far to participate in the open workshop, but the doors are still open for others, she added.

In 1997, the UN General Assembly decided to proclaim June 26 the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, with a view to the total eradication of torture and the effective functioning of the Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, which entered into force on June 26, 1987 - Albawaba.com
