An Islamic court in the Gulf emirate of Ras al-Khaimah has sentenced two Bangladeshi lovers to 150 lashes each and three months in jail for adultery, a newspaper said Monday.
The couple, named only as M.S. and S.W., aged 24 and 20 years, were caught in the act by their Emirati sponsor who was awoken after the pair's early morning barn romp had panicked his sheep into a constant bleating, the Gulf News reported.
Both will be deported after serving their sentences, the paper said.
Sharia courts throughout the seven city states that make up the United Arab Emirates hand down severe punishment that usually include the lash, a jail term and deportation for men and women who have affairs outside wedlock.
In April, an Emirati court commuted the sentence of an Indonesian maid who was condemned to death by stoning for adultery, and instead ordered her to serve a one-year jail term to be followed by deportation.
