Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat will meet in Paris Wednesday, Barak's office said in a statement issued Tuesday.

"Following an American initiative, Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Yasser Arafat will meet tomorrow (Wednesday) in Paris," it said, without giving further details.

US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said earlier she would be meeting both leaders in the French capital on Wednesday but it was not clear that she would see them both together.

Israel and the Palestinian territories have been rocked by bloody clashes that have claimed the lives of more than 50 people, mostly Palestinians.

The violence erupted over a visit Thursday by Israeli right-wing hardliner Ariel Sharon to he al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem, a disputed holy site at the heart of the Middle East conflict -- JERUSALEM(AFP)
