A meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and the leader of the right-wing Likud opposition party Ariel Sharon broke up on Sunday without an agreement on the formation of an emergency government, Israeli army and public radios reported.

The two men have reached a partial accord on conditions for the creation of a political alliance in the face of a month-long wave of violence in the Palestinian territories.

But differences remain over Sharon's demands for a right of veto over peace and security decisions and the number of portfolios that would be awarded to Likud members, public radio said.

The meeting started at about 2:30 PM (1230 GMT) - JERUSALEM (AFP)
