BBC correspondent Joseph Winter left Zimbabwe Monday, two days after the government had ordered him out of the country, claiming his employment permit had expired.
Winter and Uruguayan journalist Mercedes Sayagues, who writes for South Africa's Mail and Guardian newspaper, were both served with 24-hour expulsion orders on Saturday, but won a court order allowing them to stay on until Friday.
Winter, speaking from Johannesburg, said he and his family would go to Britain later in the week.
The expulsion of the two journalists comes amid a broadening government crackdown on perceived opponents in the media and the judiciary, as well as the opposition.
Overnight Saturday, Winter had to flee with his family to the British High Commission in Harare after an unknown gang tried to break into his flat. Police later forcefully entered the premises, neighbours said – HARARE (AFP)
