Bayern Munich president and football legend Franz Beckenbauer has put forward the name of his colleague and vice-president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge to succeed Sepp Blatter as president of world governing body FIFA, in an interview published Wednesday in German weekly Bunte.
"The job doesn't interest me," declared the 54-year-old "Kaiser" who is still basking in the glory of leading Germany's successful bid to host the 2006 World Cup upsetting the favored South African bid.
"For international functions, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is much better. He knows everything and with his style and knowledge of languages, he would be more appropriate," said Beckenbauer of the man recently appointed as head of a commission to reform German football.
The World Cup winner both as a player in 1974 and as a coach in 1990 has been linked with the post of president of the German football Federation (DFB) to succeed Egidius Braun as well as the FIFA presidency but has played down his appointment to either post.
"I am more interested in helping to prepare the 2006 World Cup. Germany has gone backwards these past years on the international stage. Karl-Heinz can do something," he concluded - (AFP)
