belhoul lifecare to set up cardiovascular surgery centre of excellence

Ithmar Capital, one of the GCC’s leading private equity firms, is to strengthen its investment in the region’s healthcare sector with plans for a Cardiovascular Surgery Centre of Excellence in Dubai to be operated by its Fund I portfolio company Belhoul Lifecare

The Centre of Excellence will operate with surgical, medical and nursing teams from London’s world-renowned Harefield Specialist Heart and Lung Hospital, which is part of the Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Trust and a research partner with the UK’s National Heart & Lung Institute.

“This initiative reflects Belhoul Lifecare's vision of becoming a leader in quality healthcare services in the UAE and its commitment to bringing the best level of healthcare to patients in the region. Specialist cardiovascular and thoracic surgery teams will rotate between Dubai and the UK on a continuous basis,” said Faisal Belhoul, Vice Chairman, Belhoul Lifecare and Founder and Managing Partner of Ithmar Capital.

The centre will be led by renowned UK-based Cardiac Surgeon Mr. Mohammed Amrani - a world expert in minimally invasive valve and coronary surgery with a special interest in re-do surgery and complex cases. He is an active member of the lung and heart transplant and ventricular assist device programme and has operated on many patients from the UAE, particularly those with complex cardiac conditions. The centre will specialise in all aspects of cardiac surgery, including transplants and minimally invasive procedures.

“We have treated many patients from the region and have always believed in bringing care closer to them. Belhoul Lifecare was the preferred partner for us given its in-depth knowledge and strong track record in healthcare in the UAE. In association with Belhoul Lifecare we will perform the first minimally invasive valve and coronary surgery in the region,” explained Amrani.

The Centre of Excellence team work and teach internationally and publish research papers which set international medical standards.

“This expertise can now be accessed at a much more affordable cost by patients in this region, without the addition of UK travel and hotel stay expense. Another benefit is that recovery is typically much quicker when patients are in their home environment,” said Dr. Maher Hilali, Belhoul Lifecare Medical Director; who is also a founding member and former vice chairman of the British Arab Medical Association.

Belhoul Lifecare’s growth strategy also allows for facility expansion through new-build or improved space utilization.

“Following its investment in the Cardiovascular Centre of Excellence, Belhoul Lifecare plans to establish similar world-class medical centres for diabetes, plastic surgery and oncology, as part of its plan to invest AED 1 billion over the next three years to create a comprehensive healthcare network in the UAE,” added Belhoul.

Industry studies indicate that the future population growth within the GCC and most particularly the UAE, which is to experience a compound annual growth rate of 2.27 per cent up to the year 2015, will spur demand for first-class medical services.

“Belhoul Lifecare will serve as a healthcare platform which will strategically acquire, merge, establish and collectively manage hospitals, clinics and diagnostic facilities,”explained Khaled Wasfi Jaouni, Board Member, Belhoul Lifecare and Partner at Ithmar Capital. “The aim is to develop a fully integrated network with sufficient linkages to clinical systems, clinical operations and healthcare management expertise; and with the ability to attract and retain highly qualified physicians and practitioners”.
