A grocery store selling liquor was destroyed in an overnight explosion in the suburbs of the southern port city of Sidon, police said Wednesday.

The store, owned by Christian Paul Marun, was totally destroyed, burning down in a fire that followed the explosion, which also shattered windows in nearby buildings in Majdalyun, they said.

There were no casualties from the blast, as the store was closed at the time, they said.

The reason behind the bombing is still not known, but stores selling alcoholic drinks and others accused of renting pornographic videotapes have been repeatedly targeted by similar bomb blasts in the Sidon area, where a number of Islamic extremist groups are based.

The overnight explosion is the second of its kind this year, after an April 4 bombing of a videotape rental store in Sidon itself -- BEIRUT (AFP)
