Two Yemenis were seriously injured on Monday when a powerful explosion ripped through the car of a military officer in a southern Yemeni city, witnesses said.
They said the two victims were civilians who were passing by the car, which was parked at the governorate of Al Dali city. Several nearby cars were also badly damaged by the explosion, which could be heard several miles away.
Yemeni officials declined to comment on the blast. Lawlessness is rife in the impoverished Arab state.
Similar explosions have in the past rocked Al Dali, which lies about 140 km (90 miles) north of the southern port city of Aden.
Last month, a man was killed by blast outside the city post office and four people were injured in February by a car bomb.
Aden witnessed a spate of bombings in 1998. Authorities at the time arrested several suspects, mainly from opposition groups, but later released them.
A suicide bombing in the port city last October killed 17 US sailors aboard the missile destroyer USS Cole. Yemen has arrested six main suspects and a dozen others in connection with the blast -- ADEN, Yemen (Reuters)
