At least four people were killed when two car bomb explosions ripped through the northern Syrian town of Ain al-Arab, known as Kobani to Kurds, on the border with neighboring Turkey.

Bombers detonated two cars rigged with large quantities of extremely explosive materials near a gas station on the outskirts of the town, located over 500 kilometers (310 miles) north of the capital, Damascus, and the entrance to the town of Masharfeh on Monday, Syria’s official news agency SANA reported.

Four people lost their lives in the bombings while many more sustained various degrees of injuries.

Meanwhile, five people were killed as explosions targeted the positions of Kurdish fighters of People's Protection Units (YPG) in Kobani. The YPG fighters cut off all routes leading to the town in the aftermath of the attacks.

On Sunday, 14 people, including seven children, lost their lives and 25 others sustained injuries when mortar shells fired by militants struck the al-Maidan neighborhood of Syria’s northwestern city of Aleppo, located 355 kilometers (220 miles) north of Damascus.

The development came on the same day that a bomber set off an explosives-laden car near a roundabout in the al-Zahra neighborhood of Homs, located 162 kilometers (101 miles) north of Damascus, only killing himself.

The conflict in Syria, which started in March 2011, has reportedly claimed more than 240,000 lives up until now.

The violence has also forced over 3.8 million Syrians to take refuge in neighboring countries, including Jordan and Lebanon. More than 7.2 million others have been displaced within Syria, according to the United Nations.
