Bomb explodes near Cairo University

A bomb explosion injured 10 people Wednesday outside Cairo University, a recent scene of anti-government protest and the arrest of students.

Six police officers and four civilians were injured in the blast, the Interior Ministry announced, adding that 12 students from several Egyptian universities, allegedly members of the Muslim Brotherhood, were arrested for protesting and attacking campus security police.

Recent protests have caused school closings across Cairo, with students reacting to new security measures, arrests and the appearance of riot police and private security firms on campuses.

In the past several days, Cairo University was evacuated because of a bomb threat, Cairo students clashed with police during a demonstration in honor of an Alexandria University student, Mansoura University students canceled protests in light of a promise of a harsh crackdown, and Helwan University students engaged in a day of silent protest after several students were arrested.

Wednesday's bombing was the second in the university vicinity in the past six months. A police general was killed when a bomb exploded near the school's main campus.
