An attack carried out on a mosque in Saudi Arabia's eastern governate of al-Ahsa has killed at least three people on Friday, Al Arabiya News Channel reported.

Sources reported a suspect in the attack has been arrested. Seven people were reported injured in Friday's attack.

An activist, citing witness reports, said there was an explosion earlier which was then followed by gunshot attack on Imam Rida Mosque.

Accounts provided by local residents said five suspects were in a gunfire exchange with police officers.

The eastern regions of Saudi Arabia have been on alert since last year when Daesh carried out two attacks on Shia mosques.

In August, a suicide attack killed 15 people in an bombing on a mosque used by members of a local security force in southwest Saudi Arabia. In May, a suicide attacker blew himself up during Friday prayers at a mosque in al-Qadeeh village, located in eastern Saudi Arabia, killing 21 and injuring 81 others.
