Prosecutor dies from wounds after Istanbul shootout

A public prosecutor in Turkey was fatally wounded Tuesday after three captors held him hostage, Reuters reported. 

The three captors holding were killed and the captive critically injured after security forces ran into the office, causing a shootout. The hostage later died in the hospital.

"Our three friends have been shot to death," one tweet read.

Mehmet Selim Kiraz handling the case of Berkin Elvan, a teenager who was in a coma for nearly a year before he died of injuries incurred during a government protest. Security forces stormed the office after his capture when they heard disturbances. 

"Because of gunshots heard from inside the prosecutor's office, our security forces carried out an operation," Altinok told Reuters.

A photo of a captor holding the lawyer with a gun to his head was posted on Twitter under an account linked to a leftist militant group, Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C), believed to have been responsible for the attack.

The Turkish prime minister issued a temporary media blackout during the incident.
