Daesh allegedly releases video of Kenji Goto beheading

Daesh militants released a video on Saturday claiming they had executed Japanese hostage Kenji Goto, the SITE monitoring group said.

Reuters could not immediately verify the video, which showed a hooded man standing over the 47-year-old journalist dressed in an orange outfit with a knife held to his throat.  The footage then showed a still of a body with a head placed on it.

Addressing Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the hooded man says: "Because of your reckless decision to take part in an unwinnable war, this knife will not only slaughter Kenji, but will also carry on and cause carnage wherever your people are found. So let the nightmare for Japan begin."

The video comes just days after another Japanese man, Haruna Yukawa, was beheaded by Daesh militants.

Goto is a well-known journalist and film-maker who traveled to Syria in October 2014.

Daesh demanded that an Iraqi-prisoner held in Jordan be released, otherwise it said Kenji Goto and Jordanian pilot Muath al-Kasaesbeh might be killed.

Jordan asked Daesh for proof that the pilot was still alive, which was not given.

Japan has said it is trying to verify the latest video.
