At least 15 people were injured in a possible bus bombing in Jerusalem Monday afternoon.
Initial reports indicated the number 12 bus exploded as it was passing near the Talpiot neighborhood in the southern end of the capital.
Police said the bus was empty at the time and it was not clear if the incident was an attack.
"The injuries were from people on an adjacent bus," police said in a tweet.
Some 15 people were rushed to area hospitals after the blast, a paramedic told Army Radio. Two people were seriously injured, including one in critical condition, police and paramedics said.
Pictures from the scene showed a city bus engulfed in flames and a second intercity bus nearby also on fire on the busy Moshe Baram street.
A plume of smoke could be seen for miles around the capital.
If a an attack, it would break weeks of calm in the city after a six-month wave of violence seemed to subside and mark a return to of a type of attack not seen in Jerusalem for years.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility.
