The White House on Friday announced the death of Daesh's second-in-command, confirming earlier reports that the senior leader had been killed in a US airstrike Tuesday, AFP reported.

The National Security Council identified the militant as Fadhil Ahmad al-Hayali, more commonly known as Haji Mutaz and the senior deputy of Daesh (ISIS) leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

US forces said Hayali was killed along with Daesh "media operative" Abu Abdullah when an airstrike hit a vehicle near Iraq's northern city of Mosul.

The White House said al-Hayali was a key player in Daesh's offensive in Mosul and had a major role in the extremists' planning operations over the past two years. The US administration described him as "a primary coordinator for moving large amounts of weapons, explosives, vehicles and people between Iraq and Syria."

Before joining Daesh, al-Hayali was a member of al-Qaeda's Iraq faction, according to AFP.
