A former Taliban fighter who fought British and American forces in Afghanistan was granted asylum in Britain because his life would be at risk if he returned home, his lawyer has said.

Hanif Bhamjee, of Cardiff-based solicitors Crowley & Co, who represented the unnamed man, said he was given permission to remain in the United Kingdom some eight months ago after fleeing his country following the fall of Kabul in November 2001.

"He was granted asylum while living in Cardiff," CNN quoted Bhamjee as saying. "He feared for his life if he went back to Afghanistan.

"He told me he had made his application in Dover and was dispersed to Cardiff."

The man showed Bhamjee wounds to his arms and legs, which he said he had sustained while fighting for the Taliban. "They looked like bullet wounds," Bhamjee said.

"I suspect he has now gone to one of the big cities, such as Birmingham or Manchester." Bhamjee said the man would have automatically been entitled to legal aid. (Albawaba.com)
