Britain's Foreign Secretary Robin Cook on Tuesday welcomed the agreement hammered out by Middle East leaders in Egypt but warned that only a "lasting settlement" will prevent new violence.

"We should have no illusions about the difficulties of turning the agreement into a reality on the ground. Only a just and lasting settlement can avoid a recurrence of the violence we have seen in recent weeks," he said.

Cook was speaking in Italy where he is accompanying Queen Elizabeth II on an official visit.

"The committee of inquiry must be used to learn the lessons that can prevent future bloodshed. Both sides now must work urgently to seize this opportunity to get the peace process back on track," he said -- LONDON (AFP)
