Britain: Prince Harry unlikely to go to fight in Iraq

A British newspaper reported Thursday that army chiefs were reconsidering their decision to let Prince Harry fight in Iraq with his army regiment. Britain’s Press Association and Sky News cited unidentified sources as saying Harry would quit the army if he wasn’t allowed to go to Iraq.

The Sun cited unnamed senior military officials as saying that the review was likely to lead to Harry being banned from the battlefield, but he could still go and do a desk job. Media reports quoted Iraqi militants as saying that they would be targeting the prince.

Previously, it was believed Harry, a second lieutenant, would lead a team of 12 men in four armoured reconnaissance vehicles.

Meanwhile, Britain's military denied the reports that it was banning Prince Harry from serving in combat in Iraq, but acknowledged his deployment was under review.

"Prince Harry's deployment to Iraq, as we have always said, is under constant consideration," a defence ministry spokeswoman said, according to Reuters. "It is still our intention that Prince Harry will deploy as a troop leader."
