A British couple on holiday drowned off the southwest coast of Cyprus on Tuesday after their rubber dinghy capsized in rough seas, orphaning two children, police said.
Peter Rainey, 49, and his wife Alison, 41, from Scotland and their nine-year-old son Callum were in the inflatable craft when it capsized off Paphos, a popular resort with British tourists.
Originally, the wife and son had taken the dinghy out to sea but when it capsized a first time Peter Rainey swam out, put the two back on board and joined them in efforts to return to shore, Paphos police told AFP.
In spite of the husband's heroic attempt, the dinghy overturned again and the couple drowned only 100 meters from the shore, while their son survived the tragic ordeal.
The family's seven-year-old daughter had remained on shore. (Albawaba.com)
