A British diplomatic source in Jordan confirmed Wednesday in a statement to “Albawaba.com” that two unknown persons attacked a British tourist Tuesday night and stabbed him with a knife.
The source, who requested anonymity, said that while the tourist who was wearing shorts and carrying a camera was wandering near Amman Intercontinental Hotel, two persons shouted at him from behind. When the tourist turned, they stabbed him with a knife in the abdomen and arm.
The source added that the two assailants fled the scene when the tourist began to shout for help.
He stressed that the incidence was not an attempt of theft.
The tourist returned to the hotel where he received first aid and was then taken to hospital where he underwent a surgical operation for three hours. The security authorities then informed the embassy.
The source added that investigations were underway to know the drives behind the attack, and that premier Ali Abu Ragheb announced that the Jordanian government will pay for all treatment costs. He said that the tourist can leave the country within four days.
Agence France Presse (AFP) said that this incident is the first of its type in Jordan since the eruption of the uprising in the Palestinian territories on Sept. 28.
Meanwhile, other informed sources revealed that the British Embassy in Amman received in the past few days, two bomb alerts in the embassy, which proved to be false after the Jordanian Security authorities carried out careful inspection of the place.
