The head of Britain's Broadcasting Standards Commission, Lord Richard Holme, resigned on Sunday following revelations in a newspaper that he had an extra-marital affair.
Lord Holme, 64, issued a statement in which he admitted having a relationship with a young woman for three years, as reported in The News of The World on Saturday.
"I leave it to others to judge what effect this sort of journalism, based on spying, telephone interception and misappropriated private correspondence for commercial gain, has on the quality of our public life," he said.
He also said he has the support of his wife, Kay, to whom he has been married for 42 years and with whom he has had four children.
Lord Holme has headed the Broadcasting Standards Commission since 1999.
He has regularly reprimanded television stations for the explicit sexual nature or violent content of some of their programs.
His work during that time was generally applauded.
He has also had an esteemed political career, notably with the Liberal Democrats, Britain's third party after Labor and the Conservatives -- LONDON (AFP)
