As part of the mall’s continuing efforts to assert its status as Dubai’s most exclusive shopping enclave, BurJuman has today announced that it is the proud sponsor of the 3rd Beach Polo Cup, which opens tomorrow at the Habtoor Grand Resort & Spa and runs between the 6th and 8th of April 2006.
Opening with a VIP gala supper and fashion show, the three-day charity event will see local teams from Audi, Stanford, National Bank of Dubai and BurJuman battle it out in this fast and adrenaline inducing game which, due to the royal and celebrity following it has traditionally attracted, has become known as the “sport of kings”.
“Whilst polo has yet to gain the cult status of racing, it is becoming an increasingly popular sport in the UAE and we are therefore proud to be supporting this prestigious event,” said Sabina Khandwani, head of research and marketing, BurJuman.

“We are also quietly confident that the BurJuman team, with the addition of famed Argentinean player Gabriel Iglesias, has a good chance of winning this year’s cup.”

“Polo is also a fantastic spectator sport and, by epitomising glamour and luxury living, makes for an ideal association with BurJuman,” she continued.

The first game of polo was recorded between the Turkomans and Persians in 600BC. During the 19th century it was adopted by the British tea-planters and military officers living in India and since then has evolved to include a host of intricate rules; it is now recognised by the International Olympic Committee.

Teams are composed of 4 players and are gauged according to their overall handicap (a handicap is an international recognition of an individual player’s ability). With a string of “ponies” a necessity, a match traditionally consists of 4 seven minute “chukkas” – although a “high-goal” match can have as many as six periods of play. At half time players leave the pitch and spectators are invited to “tread in” the erupted pitch.
