US President Bush on Tuesday night arrived in London to defend his decision to attack Iraq. According to his aides he would tell Britons that "history proves war is sometimes necessary when certain values are threatened."
In a speech Wednesday, Bush planned to argue that war is the correct path when all other means have failed, a senior administration official told reporters. "History has shown that there are times when countries must use force to defend the peace and to defend values," Bush was to say.
The remarks also were to reiterate Bush's call for countries across the globe, particularly in the Middle East, to embrace democracy.
Bush's three-day state visit is expected to be marked by massive demonstrations against the war in Iraq. British demonstrators plan to pull down a statue of Bush made of papier mache and chicken wire, to parody the toppling of Saddam Hussein's statue in Baghdad.
Meanwhile, the rumble of heavy explosions was heard after sundown Tuesday in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad as it appeared US forces were launching another operation against Iraqi resistance fighters.
The explosions, apparently heavy weapons firing, seemed to come from the western edge of the city and could be heard in the center of the capital at about 8:40 p.m. (local time). (Albawaba.com)
