Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien welcomed the announcement Saturday of an emergency summit of US, Israeli and Palestinian leaders to be held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt on Monday, reported (AFP)

"From the beginning of this crisis, we have shared the strong desire of the international community for a cessation of the violence and a resumption of negociations towards a just and lasting peace in Middle East," Chretien said in a statement.

Chretien spoke by telephone Friday and Saturday with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, and King Abdullah II of Jordan.

"Their shared desire to help bring about an end to the bloodshed is encouraging," he said.
