Cancer patients in Bahrain will soon benefit from a second deep-radiation therapy system that is to be installed at the Salmaniya Medical Complex, reported the Bahrain Tribune newspaper Saturday.
Although the building to install the equipment is ready, the machinery itself is to arrive in Bahrain next month from the US, an official at the ministry of health told the paper.
"We should be on stream before the beginning of July," Ebrahim Yaqoob said.
Yaqoob explained that the new equipment would take a tremendous load off the existing unit "that has been in operation for many years."
"The new unit is mainly for patients who need a low dose of radiation as it's of lower energy. The old machine can handle deep-radiation cases," he told the Tribune.
Meanwhile, Manama will host in March the second conference on cancer.
The conference, 'Facing Cancer in the Millennium: Prevention and Cure', will host several Arab and foreign specialists in the field, according to a press release published in the International Union Against Cancer's website -- Albawaba.com
