At least 33 people were killed and 48 injured Monday when a car bomb struck a busy square in Baghdad's Sadr City district, Reuters reported.

Three separate bombings on Saturday killed 29 people in Baghdad, while on Sunday an attack near the southern city of Najaf killed eight.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the bombing, but Daesh has regularly targeted civilian areas in the capital, and has recently stepped up its attacks across the country.

Iraqi forces continue to make gains against Daesh in Mosul, the militant group's last major stronghold in Iraq.

While recapturing Mosul would likely spell the end of Daesh's so-called "caliphate" in the country, militants would still be able to carry out a guerrilla insurgency in Iraq and other countries.
