Over 20 people have been killed in separate car bombings in the Iraqi capital Baghdad as the army gains major advances against the IS terrorists across the country.

Officials said that the bombs went off in three crowded areas of the Iraqi capital on Friday, killing at least 23 people, AFP reported.

One blast hit Baghdad’s Baladiyat district, killing at least 13 people. The second explosion rocked the city’s Adhamiyah, killing five people. The third explosion hit the Karrada district, leaving five others dead.

Officials also said that around 50 people were wounded in the attacks.

Earlier in the day, the Iraqi army backed by volunteer forces launched a mop-up operation against the IS militants north of Baghdad.

Troops supported by Shia and Sunni tribal fighters have also gained ground in Nineveh and Diyala provinces.

The overall security situation in Iraq has worsened over the past months after the IS terrorists, of whom many are foreign militants, took control of parts of Iraq’s northern and western regions.

According to the United Nations, over 1,110 people were killed in acts of violence across Iraq in September.

The IS terrorists have been committing heinous crimes in the captured areas, including mass executions and beheading of people.
