The only deputy representing the breakaway republic of Chechnya in the Russian parliament threatened Thursday to resign unless Moscow's troops improved their treatment of the republic's civilian population.
The threat from Aslambek Aslakhanov, who sits in the State Duma lower house of parliament, follows a row over "clean-up" operations by Russian troops, allegedly involving beatings and torture.
Aslakhanov said unless there was a change, he would resign later this year to draw the attention of the international community to the situation in Chechnya -- MOSCOW (AFP)
