French President Jacques Chirac invited the Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika to take part in the G8-Nepad partnership in New York. "A few months after the Evian summit," wrote President Chirac in a letter to Bouteflika, which APS received a copy, "I thought it would be useful to be able to take stock of the partnership we have started between Nepad and the G8, which we wished would be go beyond the G8 and be carried out in the long term".

The French President pointed out that he would be present in New York next September 23 at the opening of the United Nations General Assembly. "It seems to me," he went on, "that it would be an appropriate moment for a meeting between all those actively involved in our partnership".

On his part, President Bouteflika affirmed that he was "convinced that such a meeting would contribute to reinforce the dynamics for the realisation of Nepad, which received a significant boost in Evian".
