The head of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) George Tenet, is due in Israel on Friday to meet with Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, reported Haaretz newspaper.

President Bill Clinton sent Tenet to the region to prepare the ground for the US leader's separate meetings with Barak and Arafat next Wednesday in New York on the sidelines of the UN millennium assembly, said the paper.

Haaretz said Tenet will meet Barak on Friday and Saturday and Arafat on Sunday, adding that the CIA chief was also in Cairo ahead of Clinton's meeting with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak earlier this week.

Tenet was said to have played a key role in last month's Camp David summit, which was aimed at forging an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement, but concluded without any tangible results, according to the paper - Albawaba.com
