Police fired tear gas on Sunday to prevent Lebanese protesters from storming the Serail, the seat of Prime Minister Najib Mikati, whom the opposition demanded his resignation.
Following the funeral of top security chief Wissam al-Hassan, who was killed in a car bombing blast on Friday, "young protesters headed to the building which is located in the city center, but police prevented them by shooting in the air and using tear gas, "said a police officer.
The protesters threw stones and sticks. There were a number of injured among the protesters and law enforcement members. Participants at the funeral, massed on the Place des Martyrs, were incited by Fouad Siniora, a parliamentary leader of Saad Hariri's opposition. "The government is responsible for the crime that killed Wissam and his companion. That is why he must go," he told the crowd. "Mikati you can not stay in your position to cover this crime. If you stay, that is to say that you agree with what has happened and what will happen," he added.
