Fighting between government forces and Houthi rebels in southern Yemen on Sunday killed 48 fighters - including 20 government soldiers and 28 insurgents - a military officer told AFP.

“A total of 28 Houthis [rebels] and 20 of our men were killed in the fighting, which continued into the evening,” Gen. Misfer al-Harithi told AFP, saying the clashes erupted when Houthi forces attacked government positions in the Bayhan district between Shabwa and Marib provinces.

The Houthis were pushed back in a counterattack by government forces.

“Our forces managed to recapture several positions. We will not stop fighting until we take control of the entire sector,” al-Harithi added.

Much of Shabwa province is still controlled by the Iran-backed rebels.
