Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Monday that ties between Israel and the United States needed to get back on track.
“We need to all work together to return the special US-Israel relationship to constructive footing, to get back to basic shared concerns and interests,” she told Malcolm Hoenlein, the Executive Vice Chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations.
The 2008 presidential hopeful said Israel could "never become" a partisan issue -- "we must ensure that" -- and called for "a two-state solution pursued through direct negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians."
According to a statement provided by the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations -- and posted to the San Diego Jewish World -- Hoenlein had called Clinton.
“Secretary Clinton’s views are of special importance and timeliness given recent issues in the US-Israel relationship," the statement read.
His comments echoed Clinton's call for action on the Palestinian front, he added that direct negotiations were the only possibility for lasting peace.
