The commission probing the killings of almost the entire royal family of Nepal is likely hand over its report to the king Thursday, a government minister said.

Shiva Raj Joshi, Minister for Information and Communications, also told a press conference that the government was keen that the situation did not go "beyond control".

"The committee will possibly submit its report to His Majesty the King by today," he said Thursday.

"His Majesty's government upon receiving the report will definitely complete the entire necessary formalities," he added, without saying what these would consist of.

He said the contents of the report would be made public, possibly later on Thursday.

King Birendra and eight other members of the royal family were gunned down at the royal palace on June 1.

Eyewitness accounts have blamed Crown Prince Dipendra for the shootings. He then turned the gun on himself and was declared king while he lay in a coma in hospital, dying two days later.

King Gyanendra, brother of Birendra, set up a two-man commission, comprising the chief justice and the speaker of parliament, to investigate the shootings.

He originally gave them just three days to complete their report, but later extended the deadline for four days to Thursday -- KATHMANDU (AFP)
