ALBAWABA - Carles Puigdemont, a separatist leader living in exile following Catalonia's unsuccessful 2017 independence bid, was confirmed to be wanted for arrest when the Spanish Supreme Court on Monday declined to grant him amnesty on corruption accusations.

The court released a statement saying " judge of the Supreme Court today issued an order in which he declares the amnesty not applicable to the offense of embezzlement in the case against the former president of the Generalitat Carles Puigdemont,".

The ruling comes a month after MPs passed an amnesty measure aimed at putting an end to years of efforts to punish people engaged in the failed independence attempt that sparked Spain's greatest political crisis in decades.

The action is anticipated to affect roughly 400 persons, including Puigdemont, the regional leader at the time.

An appeal must be filed within the following three days. Catalan separatist groups sought the amnesty bill as a condition for parliamentary backing last November, allowing Pedro Sanchez to serve a fresh four-year term.
